This project required the restoration of both the original slate roof system and the copper built-in gutters. When the building owner purchased the property they were told the roof and gutters had already been restored and should be in good shape for the next 50 years! Within one year they found the box gutters were leaking and damaging the soffit area. After a detailed inspection we found the restoration work was not performing. The previous contractor showcased their lack of knowledge by replacing slates with the wrong type and color, poorly soldering the copper and not allowing any expansion and contraction to occur in the gutters. They installed copper box gutter liners but never removed the original sheet metal liners. Therefore, the old rotten wood was left in place and the new copper box gutter liners were simply tucked under the first row of slate. This poor technique allowed water to immediately run behind the new copper box gutters and cause further deterioration. We found the copper hip/ridge secured with steel screws, directly through the slate and with no sealant applied to prevent leaking. These steel screws were already beginning to rust.
HKC Roofing proposed to restore the slate roof and box gutters. This included replacing all broken, missing and incorrectly installed slates with matching, salvaged, “Peach Bottom” slates. Furthermore, we would need to replace all of the chimney flashings, pipes, valleys, dormers, and hips/ridges with new copper sheet metal. This completed the restoration and will allow the roof to last another 50 years or more! The box gutter liners needed to be completely removed, including the copper and old tin so the wood framing could be inspected. The wood needed to be replaced where deterioration had occurred and checked for proper drainage. Afterwards, new copper liners were fabricated and installed. All of the seams were riveted together and soldered. Most importantly, expansion joints were installed every 30 feet to allow the box gutters to expand and contract, eliminating stress on the seams and ensuring long-term performance. “A very thorough, neat, and professional job! Well done. “
“Very pleased with your work and your staff. Neighbors told us how well the job was handled while we were not at home. We have recommended you to everyone.”
“My gratitude for the fabulous job on our roof. Neighbors were jealous that their crews threw scrap on bushes and lawns, while your crew filled a trailer from above. At the end of a 12 hour first day, everything was clean and tidy. Also, your salesman’s involvement did not end after i signed the deal.”
“The boys did an excellent job for me. The salesman was great to do business with, and a big help to us. Keep up the high standards.”
“I have hired HKC for several projects. Our school and church roofs were over 30 years old and Henry and his crew have been fantastic to work with as we have put a replacement plan in place. They are always timely and very responsive when we have had minor problems with the old roofs.
I highly recommend HKC for any roofing project.”
